Day Treatment Program in Utah

Over 20 million individuals in the U.S. received a substance use disorder (SUD) diagnosis in the past year. But, only 10.3% of individuals who have been struggling with SUD in the past year received drug addiction treatment for the disorder, according to The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

SUD treatment involves more than the individual simply stopping their drug or alcohol use. Many with a substance dependency need to learn certain skills to experience long-term recovery.

Individuals can come to terms with substance abuse and do a little soul-searching to identify how their substance abuse started by learning more about addiction and the science behind this disease. These are just some elements individuals can expect when participating in partial hospitalization or day treatment programs like Steps Recovery Centers in Utah.

Partial Hospitalization Program vs. Day Treatment

Addiction treatment occurs on a continuum of care. Since it’s a complicated condition, there are various treatment approaches. Addiction is also a dangerous condition that requires a healthcare professional to recommend which treatment method is appropriate for which individual.

Two types of treatment for individuals struggling with addiction are partial hospitalization programs (PHP) and day treatment programs. Both of these constitute a compromise between inpatient rehab and outpatient treatment.

Many individuals participating in a partial hospitalization program in Utah or a day treatment program know both are excellent solutions to continuing with addiction treatment. Yet, some aren’t sure what the difference between the two is. While the two terms are frequently used interchangeably, there are some differences between the two.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

While most PHPs take place in hospitals, inpatient hospitalization isn’t involved. Partial hospitalization programs are extra-intensive outpatient substance use programs that enable participants to go home each night or stay in a sober atmosphere while receiving treatment.

So, individuals who decide to participate in PHP don’t stay or live at the facility. Instead, they participate in treatment five to seven days a week, up to six hours a day, and they can leave the hospital once the day is over. PHPs can last anywhere from several weeks to several months.

Partial hospitalization programs provide a higher level of care than standard outpatient programs or intensive outpatient programs (IOP). Individuals in PHPs receive comprehensive services that provide continuous healthcare monitoring by doctors, addiction experts, and nurses. These professionals oversee medicine and provide treatment for mental and physical complications resulting from prolonged substance abuse. Individuals whose behavioral, mental, or physical requirements don’t require inpatient treatment can participate in PHPs.

Day Treatment

Day treatment programs work similarly to partial hospitalization programs. They’re a type of outpatient program where the individual goes home every night after treatment.

The only fundamental differences are day treatment programs require less of a time commitment than partial hospitalization programs. And day treatments are typically held in an office or residential setting instead of in a hospital. An individual attending day treatment may feel like they’re at home.

Generally, day treatment programs run three to five times weekly and no more than six hours a day. Like partial hospitalization programs, they can last several weeks or several months. A day treatment program is also run by qualified medical professionals and addiction experts, like those at Steps Recovery Centers.

Benefits of a Day Treatment Program in Utah

There are many benefits of day treatment programs to consider, including:

1. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Focus

Good day treatment programs for addiction will also address co-occurring and mental health disorders. Other mental illnesses and drug use often coexist. Sometimes, other mental disorders may come before addiction, such as:

  • ADepression
  • AAnxiety
  • ASchizophrenia

In other situations, drug use can worsen or trigger those mental health conditions, especially in individuals with specific vulnerabilities.

A day treatment program involves enough clinical hours to really jump into learning the concepts and building the skills needed to support sobriety and lifelong mental health.

2. Cost-Effective and High-Level of Care

Day treatment programs offer the best level of outpatient care needed. They provide individuals with a lot of structured support and more or as much clinical contact time that a residential program would. However, they do so without the hefty price tag and disruption of residential treatment programs.

3. Individual Treatment Plan

Based on specific evaluations, the healthcare professional will develop an Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP) that forms the basis for treatment. They can adjust this ITP based on the individual’s progress. The key is to tailor treatment to the individual’s specific needs.

4. Family Participation

Day treatment programs allow for family participation and feedback. Individuals can continue interacting with their families regularly and will have the opportunity to put the new skills they’ve learned to practice in real-time. Residential programs frequently have the occasional family weekend. Still, families only have the chance to practice what they’re learning once their loved one returns home and they’re no longer connected to a support system.
