Developing a Personal Action Plan for Addiction Recovery

May 25, 2022

After completing substance abuse treatment and coming out of drug rehab in Orem, it might become overwhelming for you to navigate your life. You may not feel connected to your past life and be skeptical and scared of going back to the responsibilities and routines of everyday life.

During the addiction treatment in Utah, you must have worked through your addiction and the emotions and thoughts associated with it. The rehab team must have also helped you develop a positive attitude and set multiple goals to maintain sobriety and avoid relapse. However, if you want to succeed at this, you must develop and follow a personal action plan that will help you adapt to your new life.

Below, we have talked about a personal action plan for addiction recovery and how to develop it!

What is a personal action plan?

Formulating a personal action plan is one of the essential things you must do after coming out of rehab. It incorporates a unique set of goals, methods, guidelines, and processes to make the recovery journey smooth. It is basically an amalgamation of the knowledge and skills you developed in the drug rehab in Payson and your learnings about yourself before and after the rehab treatment.

A personal action plan will motivate you towards recovery and keep you focused and accountable. Additionally, it will offer you strength when sobriety seems impossible.

How to develop a personal action plan?

While developing a personal action plan, you must be honest with yourself and introspect. Make sure you take out some private time for yourself. You can also ask your loved ones for help during this process.

Spend some time reflecting on yourself. You can listen to music, take a walk, or do what you love. However, remember to not pressurize yourself with expectations and keep your eyes fastened on the primary goal.

The first four steps of developing a personal action plan have been derived from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) publication.

Daily maintenance plan

You must do the following things to keep yourself on track and focused on sobriety:

  • Positive mindset: You should learn to stay centered and note down how you feel when you are in a positive space. You can use simple adjectives to describe yourself like funny, patient, a good listener, or relaxed.
  • Dream and goals: It involves allowing yourself to grow and find hope. You should list out the goals that are your top priority, including finding a job, attending therapy, or starting your own business.
  • Daily routine: Developing a daily routine will bring you solidarity and help prevent stress. After coming out of rehab, it is time to develop new and healthy skills to stay on track and avoid relapse. By keeping yourself occupied, you will remain organized and productive.
