Recovery is rarely a straight line. It twists, stalls, and sometimes doubles back on itself. At Steps Recovery Centers, we understand that healing from addiction requires more than just stopping substance use; it requires rebuilding the person beneath it. That is why our approach goes far beyond surface-level solutions. We treat the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.

Central to that philosophy is connection. Human beings heal in relationship with one another. That is not just a belief; it is something backed by decades of clinical research. Our group therapy program is one of the most powerful tools in our treatment model, built with intention, clinical rigor, and genuine compassion. Whether you are just beginning your recovery journey or working to maintain long-term sobriety, group therapy at Steps RC plays a pivotal role in helping you get, and stay, well.

We serve clients across Northern and Southern Utah from our locations in Murray, Orem, St. George, and Payson. If you are ready to take a step forward, we are ready to walk with you.

Group Therapy: The Basics

Group therapy is one of the most widely used and most effective treatment modalities in addiction recovery. It reduces isolation, builds coping skills, fosters accountability, and creates a genuine sense of belonging. The benefits are well-documented, and the results speak for themselves. Understanding what group therapy actually involves can make a real difference in your willingness to engage with it, so let us break it down.

What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a structured, therapist-led form of treatment where multiple individuals meet together to work toward shared therapeutic goals.

It is not just sitting in a circle and talking. A trained therapist facilitates each session using evidence-based techniques to help members process emotions, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and build new behaviors. Sessions typically involve between six and twelve participants and can take several different forms depending on the goals of the group.

What Are the Three Types of Group Therapy?

There are three primary types of group therapy used in addiction and mental health treatment: psychoeducational groups, process groups, and skills development groups.

Psychoeducational groups provide structured information about addiction, mental health, and the recovery process. Think of these as classroom-style sessions where clients learn about how substances affect the brain, what triggers look like, and how to build a sustainable foundation for sobriety.

Process groups,  sometimes called interpersonal or support groups,  are more open and exploratory. Participants share experiences, reflect on their feelings, and receive honest feedback from peers and the therapist. These groups are especially powerful for addressing the emotional pain and relationship patterns that often fuel substance use.

Skills development groups teach concrete coping tools, such as stress management, communication, emotional regulation, and relapse prevention, that clients can apply immediately in daily life.

The most effective treatment programs use all three types of groups in combination. Our group therapy program at Steps RC does exactly that.

What Are the 5 Stages of Group Therapy?

Every group therapy experience moves through five distinct stages: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning.

In the forming stage, members are getting acquainted, and trust is just beginning to develop. There is often some apprehension, which is completely normal.

Storming follows as people grow more comfortable and real dynamics begin to emerge. Conflict and friction are part of this stage, and working through them is part of the growth.

Norming is where the group begins to find its rhythm. Trust deepens, members open up more freely, and a genuine sense of safety takes hold

Performing is where the deepest therapeutic work happens. The group is cohesive, honest, and functioning at a high level, and members challenge each other constructively and celebrate each other’s progress.

Finally, adjourning marks the close of the group experience. It is a time to reflect on the journey, acknowledge growth, and prepare for the next chapter of recovery.

Each stage serves a purpose. Together, they form a complete arc of healing.

How Does Group Therapy Support Recovery?

Group therapy supports recovery by directly addressing the isolation, shame, and emotional dysregulation that sit at the root of most addiction.

Addiction thrives in secrecy. It convinces people they are uniquely broken and that no one else could possibly understand. Group therapy dismantles that belief. When someone hears their own story reflected in another person’s experience, something important shifts. Shame begins to lose its grip. And when shame lifts, real healing becomes possible.

Group therapy also builds accountability in a way that feels natural rather than forced. Being part of a group means showing up for yourself and for others. Members invest in each other’s progress. They notice when someone is struggling. They celebrate breakthroughs together. That mutual investment is quietly but powerfully motivating.

It also provides a structured space to develop the emotional and interpersonal skills, including communication, boundary-setting, and stress tolerance,  that many people in addiction have never had the opportunity to fully build.

What To Expect From Our Group Therapy Program

At Steps Recovery Centers, our group therapy program is built on clinical excellence and genuine human connection. Every session is purposeful, structured, and led by trained professionals who understand both addiction and the mental health challenges that so often accompany it.

Group Sessions Used as Part of a Holistic Treatment Plan

Our group therapy program is designed to complement every level of care we offer. While patients undergo medical detox, group sessions are gentle and psychoeducational, helping clients begin to understand addiction and orient to recovery while they stabilize physically. As clients step into Day Treatment or Residential care, group therapy becomes more intensive, running alongside individual therapy, family therapy, EMDR, CBT, and DBT.

In our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), group therapy takes center stage. Clients attend multiple sessions per week, building on earlier insights while beginning to reintegrate into daily life. In Outpatient and Aftercare settings, ongoing group participation provides the continuity and accountability that research consistently links to long-term sobriety. At every level of care, group therapy works in coordination with the full continuum of treatment to deliver truly whole-person care.

Sessions Led By an Experienced Team

The quality of a group therapy experience depends enormously on the person facilitating it. At Steps RC, our sessions are led by licensed therapists and counselors with deep, specialized expertise in substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Our clinical team is trained in evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed care.

Beyond credentials, our team brings genuine compassion and hard-earned perspective. They meet every client with honesty, patience, and an unshakable belief that recovery is possible for anyone willing to do the work.

      A Supportive, Welcoming Environment

Walking into a group therapy session for the first time can feel intimidating. We take that seriously. Creating a space where every person feels genuinely safe, respected, and welcomed is a core commitment at Steps Recovery Centers. Group members can expect to:

      • Be treated with respect and full confidentiality
      • Be encouraged to participate and share at their own pace
      • Learn from others and develop new skills and coping strategies
      • Be supported by both the group facilitator and fellow members
      • Take an active, empowered role in their own recovery and growth

No one is pushed to open up before they are ready. But as trust develops, so does the invitation,  and the transformation that tends to follow is remarkable.
