Steps Recovery Center recognizes how vital the mind, body, and spirit are in their connection to the whole person. We take a holistic approach to treating those with depression that may contribute to their substance abuse; this includes treating the whole person, and find that it tends to be more successful, especially since addiction affects every aspect of a person’s life. With a customized and individualized program, a holistic approach just makes sense. It affords an opportunity to meet the patient’s physical and psychological needs and allows them to engage physically, emotionally, and mentally.

What is Depression?

Depression is a medical and mental disorder. By definition, depression causes adverse effects to one’s feelings and behaviors and can elicit bodily symptoms that include:

Being in a state of persistent sadness or depressed mood
Changes in appetite, thus increasing or decreasing weight
Declined interest in activities and hobbies once interested or previously enjoyed
Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or shame
Trouble thinking clearly or making decisions
Decreased energy and determination
Declining physical activity
Interrupted sleep patterns that may lead to insomnia or sleeping too much

There are different types of depression: persistent depressive disorders,(dysthymia) bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder, (SAD) psychotic depression, postpartum depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), situational depression, and atypical depression.

Depression and Substance Abuse

Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, substance abuse and depression go hand-in-hand. It’s usually necessary that a person dealing with this dual-diagnosis get help from a depression treatment center that can tackle both problems at once. It’s a chicken and egg situation. Did the depression cause substance abuse, or did the substance abuse cause depression, of which several drugs are downers or depressants?

Some of these drugs are alcohol, barbiturates, and Benzodiazepines, so it’s not surprising if someone going through depression drowns their sadness in alcohol or other drugs. Depending on what type of depression a person suffers from and their comorbid substance abuse, we at Steps may combine several treatment modalities that have shown success. When you or a family member is admitted to our facility, you will speak to an admissions counselor that will take down your history of depression and substance abuse, if applicable. You will be placed in the hands of a caring and supportive recovery team who has your back with every step of the process.

Your individualized plan may include various methods of treatment, such as psychotherapy, trauma therapy treatment, EMDR, Reiki, nutritional therapy, exercise, meditation, yoga, 12-step program, and more.

What to Expect

When you are admitted into our facility, you will begin the process of recovery through stages. The first phase is drug detox (if needed) and social detoxification. In essence, this focuses on peer and social support and provides care for clients who have severe withdrawal symptoms and need 24-hour assistance.

Stage two is the diagnosis and customized care. You or a loved one will be put in an inpatient residential treatment or continuing care program, or it may include outpatient care; this includes day treatment, intensive outpatient, general outpatient, or transition treatment.

Stage three is the final step of the program that targets transitional care to a stable life through sober living. Steps guarantee that those individuals who go through our program are welcome to come back at any time for any reason for additional support—without charge for life.
